Seattle Food & Bev help
The list comes from your Google Sheet. The app only reads your restaurant tab; everything it saves goes to the "app data" tab.
Reading a card
| ๐ 17 min | Transit time from where you are (or your planned start). The walk is listed too when it's under 25 minutes. |
| 1.2 mi | Straight-line distance, for places beyond the nearest 15 or when there's no signal. |
| ๐ / โ ๏ธ / ๐ด | Open until a time and how long you'd have; under an hour is flagged; closed when you'd arrive. |
| ๐น / ๐ท | Happy hour on (or starting within 30 min) when you'd arrive, or a special that day. These places move to the top when they're within 20 minutes. |
| ๐ณ inKind | The deals or description cell says "inkind". Also moves to the top when open and within 20 minutes. |
| โญ ๐ โ | From your "would recommend" section; a green-highlighted row; marked visited in the app. |
Tap a card to open the place in Google Maps.
Planning ahead
- Tap ๐ Near me ยท now to pick a starting place, a time, or both.
- Pick on map, or press and hold the map, to start from a dropped pin.
- Back to here and now resets it.
Setting up another phone
- At the bottom of the list, tap Share setup link and send the link privately. Opening it once connects that phone; then add the page to the home screen.
- The link works like a password to your list. If it ever gets out, see "The link got out" below.
- With no signal the list still opens. For a map with no signal, download the area in the Google Maps app (profile picture โ Offline maps); tapping a card opens it there.
Changing the list
- Add, edit, or remove places in the restaurant tab of the Sheet, then tap Refresh. A new place appears at once wherever its row is, as long as it's under the right heading. Its location and hours come from a Google lookup: tap Look up now when the app offers it, wait for the overnight run, or use the Sheet's Seattle Food & Bev โ Fill missing info menu.
- โ Edit notes on a card changes its description or deals in the app only (marked "edited in app"). The restaurant tab isn't changed; the original stays visible in the edit form with an undo, and if you later change that cell in the Sheet, the Sheet wins.
- ๏ผ Add a place in the app searches Google, lets you pick the match, and saves it to the Sheet's "added from app" tab. The app never writes to the restaurant tab; move rows across by hand whenever you like (a place in both tabs is shown once).
- Deals are read from the deals column: days and times like
HH m-f 4-6,daily 5-6, 9-close, or$2 oysters mondays. "Happy hour" with no times is shown but can't be ranked. - Type
inkindin a place's deals cell to give it the inKind chip. - A green fill on the name marks a favorite. Rows under your avoid heading never appear.
The "app data" tab
- The script manages it. Two things are yours to type in the Status column:
ok(the Google match is right, stop flagging it) andskip(not a single place, so no location). - Red rows weren't found on Google; yellow rows matched a different name. Fixing the name or neighborhood in the restaurant tab makes it look again.
- Visits you mark in the app are saved here: date, verdict, deals seen, notes.
Costs and limits
- The Sheet's Seattle Food & Bev โ Show Google usage this month menu shows how much of each free allowance is used. The script stops itself at about 90% of each.
- Travel times are reused if you've moved less than 200 m in the last 10 minutes.
- The map view's own limit is the daily cap set on the map key in Google Cloud.
Upkeep
- There's nothing to do on a schedule. Each night the script looks up new places and refreshes the oldest hours.
- If something needs fixing, a โ ๏ธ Needs attention box appears at the top of the list saying what and why: a renamed tab or heading, Google refusing requests (usually billing or the key), an allowance nearly used up, or the overnight update not running.
- Worth a glance every month or two: the red and yellow rows in the "app data" tab, and Show Google usage this month in the Sheet's menu.
- Keep the restaurant tab's name and its section headings as they are; the script finds places by them.
If something's wrong
- "Couldn't update the list": no signal. The app shows the copy it saved last time, sorted by straight-line distance.
- List is AโZ: location is blocked or off. Allow it for this site in Chrome's site settings.
- "The key doesn't match": use Change Sheet connection at the bottom of the list and paste the URL and key again.
- The link got out: in Apps Script, run
resetKey, thenshowAppSetup, and enter the new key on each phone.
